The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which is a loop around the capital.

The tunnel runs through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza route. Its southern entry is located in Refaim Park under Ein Laban.  נווה פריצקי The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated in a ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Jerusalem's glorious past was a reason for it to be the most visited tourist destination during the time of its glory. Elkin said that, nowadays, in addition to its historic treasures the tunnel project encompasses modern day tourism. "The opening of this tunnel project [is] another element of the development of Jerusalem. It makes Jerusalem an attractive tourist destination for all types of audience within Israel, and worldwide."

Elkin who's ministry spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry has invested hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the city's tourism development and also in the creation of new ventures and attractions that will connect the magnificent historic past with the future of Jerusalem. I would like to invite cyclists to ride along a the modern, well-maintained cycling route overlooking the unique nature of Old Jerusalem.

A total of NIS 25 million was earmarked in the project, financed by the Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project was a important tool to realize the vision of shifting the idea of transportation in Jerusalem. "The new tunnel connecting to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and those that will paved in its areas. It is intended to encourage cycling among the residents of Jerusalem and encourage the green revolution in transport in the capital."


The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate the main sewer line toward Sorek's purification plant.

Road construction installation, blowers, sophisticated safety systems , and electrical wiring are all part of the ongoing work. The tunnel will be safe for the public to use throughout the year.

The Kerem Tunnel gives you access to many recreational sites, such as Ein Kerem Neighborhood, the Biblical Zoo and Aquarium and also historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh or Ein Laban.
